Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis has critiqued economic systems that further inequality, writing in Evangelii Gaudium “such an economy kills”. Before the opening session this past Saturday, he tweeted, “The earth and its poor urgently demand a sound economy and a sustainable development.”

In May 2019, on the feast of St. Joseph the worker, Francis invited young people to Assisi to enter a “covenant” of global change to “reanimate” a new economy “attentive to the person and to the environment,”
